ADF&G 2012 Copper River & PWS Salmon Forecast

ALASKA DEPARTMENT OF FISH & GAME RELEASE 2012 COPPER RIVER AND PRINCE WILLIAM SOUND SALMON FORECAST

Following a stronger than anticipated king and sockeye harvest in 2011, the Alaska Department of Fish & Game released their preliminary forecast numbers for the 2012 season today.

 

Copper River King harvest anticipated at 27,000

Copper River Sockeye harvest anticipated at 1,430,000

Copper River Coho: ADF&G does not forecast for Coho, average return is 350,000

The 2011 forecast was for 1.2 million sockeye, 9,000 kings and 293,000 coho salmon. Final harvest estimates have not been released by the Department, but the Copper River posted very strong sockeye and king runs, with a smaller than average coho return. For the 2012 season, biologists are establishing and managing for a higher escapement goal for both king and sockeye than has been used in previous years.

 

Prince William Sound harvest estimates are:

PWS Pink: 3,210,000

PWS Chum*: 36,000

PWS Sockeye*: 324,000

*Does not factor in PWSAC enhanced stock forecasts
