Choice matters, and when you choose Prince William Sound Sockeye, you can rest assured that you are choosing in a way that is good for you, and good for the planet. The framers of the Alaska Constitution recognized the importance of protecting Alaska’s abundant natural resources, and included in their landmark document a mandate that “fish...be utilized, developed, and maintained on the sustained yield principle.” This dedication to sustainable management has resulted in an ever-replenishing supply of wild salmon for generations to come.

The Prince William Sound Sockeye runs are all carefully managed for long-term sustainability by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game. ADF&G monitors weirs at several points along Prince William Sound and count each salmon heading up the river to ensure an adequate number migrate to spawning grounds to reproduce each year. Weirs are essential tools for the management and research of many fish stocks, especially salmon. They help Fish and Game workers count fish moving up or downstream; of all the streamside assessment tools, including counting towers and sonar, a weir gives the most accurate, verifiable count of the number of fish moving through the system.

But there’s much more to the story.  Our marketing partner, The Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute has brilliantly outlined sustainability as it pertains not just to Prince William Sound Sockeye, but to all of the species harvested within Alaska.
